How to Essex woman held in credit card theft

HILLSDALE — An Essex County woman who allegedly tried to buy more than $200 worth of cigarettes at three different borough stores has been charged with several counts of credit card theft and fraud, police said.

Carlotta J. Alston, 51, of East Orange, was being held in the Bergen County Jail on Monday in lieu of $20,000 bail, police said.

Police went to the King’s Supermarket on Sunday afternoon after employees called and said a woman tried to buy more than $200 worth of cigarettes with a revoked credit card. The employees described the woman and said she had left the store.

Officers William Diedtrich CQ and Jeff Angermeyer CQ found the woman, later identified as Alston, in the parking lot. She was arrested after the officers found five credit cards in her possession, each bearing someone else’s name.

Thirty minutes earlier, Alston allegedly had picked the pocket of a Hillsdale woman who was shopping at the Shop Rite, police said. Alston allegedly had taken the credit cards and attempted to purchase cigarettes at a Shop Rite, at King’s Supermarket and a Bottle King store.

The credit card company’s automatic fraud detection system had already revoked the credit cards because of the unusual spike in usage in a short period of time, police said.
